As part of its effort to create opportunities for its residents, the City of Cape Town has set aside R4.5 million to assist students who need financial support for the 2018 academic year. This funding will help students with registration, exam, and class fees at universities and FET colleges.

The City’s Corporate Services Directorate is offering bursaries to full-time students living in the greater Cape Metropolitan area. These bursaries are available to students enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate programs.

Recently, along with the Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Raelene Arendse, the City briefed potential applicants and residents in Elsies River on how to apply for these bursaries.

Education is seen as the most valuable investment to help young people and residents gain the qualifications they need, especially in fields with skills shortages that are in demand across various industries. Financial struggles often prevent people from reaching their full potential or obtaining the qualifications needed to become part of the workforce.

The City’s investment in these bursaries aligns with its efforts to reduce unemployment and fight poverty by providing residents with access to educational opportunities.

This initiative is also part of the City’s Organizational Development and Transformation Plan, which aims to be more responsive to the needs of the community.

The bursaries are available for 25 critical fields of study, including accounting, artisan training, auditing, economics, renewable energy, and medical specializations, among others.

The City understands that financial barriers are one of the biggest challenges preventing young South Africans from accessing tertiary education, and it is committed to ensuring that money isn’t a barrier for some.

This program offers opportunities to young people who might not otherwise be able to attend higher education due to financial limitations. In the previous year, the City awarded 65 bursaries through this initiative, and they hope even more students will take advantage of this opportunity.

The external bursary program helps learners and unemployed youth gain qualifications in essential fields needed by the City of Cape Town. According to Councillor Arendse, the goal is to attract skilled employees and develop talent within the city, reinforcing the idea that Cape Town is an employer of choice.
